Standing Stones

​

Ballymeanoch Standing Stones - Argyll.

​

Callanish Standing Stones - Lewis.

Dating from as early as 5000 years ago, Callanish is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Britain. 

​​

Hill o' Many Stanes, Mid Clyth - Caithness.

A fan-shaped arrangement of some 200 standing stones in 22 rows. The function is still unknown with some speculating it may have been an astronomical observatory.

​​

Ring of Brodgar, Stromness - Orkney.

36 stones of the original 60 remain. The circle is part of a larger ritual complex including Maes Howe and the Stones of Stenness. 

​

Of the original 12 stones only 4 survive. Excavation in the 1970s revealed a stone setting in the centre of the circle.
